Mom post: Self care and my review of three face masks

I love being a mom to my sweet baby girl. She makes me laugh, and cry and I know it sounds cheesy, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

But at the same time, I wondered (especially in those first few weeks), “How am I ever going to have time to do anything for me again?”

As I looked down at my chipped toenails, and stared in the mirror at my tired looking face (also known as my “new face from here on in”) I thought things like going for a jog, paining my toenails, and mixing up essential oils for my face were a thing of the past.

But then, baby girl started napping. She started to have a bedtime routine, and I found myself not knowing what do to with 60 consecutive minutes to myself (and sometimes more!). In those first weeks, I took that time to clean the house. Then I started getting annoyed at the fact that I never had “me” time. And really, it was my own fault.

I know the house will get clean eventually. I now decide that the first hour after bedtime is now MINE. So what to do?

As I watch Netflix, or read a fiction book, and kick my feet up, you can find me, a few times a week, with a face mask on. I used to do these a lot in the past, but let go of that routine over the past few years. I think it was mainly because I didn’t want to freak out my husband who could walk in anytime and find me looking like I had a Halloween costume on, but after him being in the room when I delivered our baby, I have zero hangups about my body around him anymore.

So 3 times a week, I use one of these face masks to calm down and chill out. Because let’s face it, being a mom isn’t the most relaxing job on the face of the earth.

  1. Andalou Turmeric and Gold (one time use) face mask. These ones are a bit pricey, but man do they ever smell good and make my face feel as soft as my baby’s. I’ve also used the anti-aging 8 berry fruit enzyme one, and I’m also a fan! There’s little mess to clean up, and it’s really convenient.
  2. St Ives Timeless Clay mask. This one is great value for what you get. It’s quick, you get a lot and it leaves my skin feeling soft and clean. It smells fresh too!
  3. Sephora Green Tea face mask: What I like about these paper masks is that you don’t have to wash them off. So if you’re too tired to wash off a face mask, this one is for you! I also really enjoyed the under eye masks as I found that it made me look less tired, even if I wasn’t.

After a few weeks of getting back into my face mask routine I began to get some compliments. Friends commented that I look better now than I ever have before! (Which is crazy to me given the past 3 and a half months). There’s something about using up these little pockets of time that I think will make for long lasting habits. I think being a mom is making me look at absolutely everything differently, and it’s for the better!

It feels a little indulgent for me to take time for myself given my “to do” list but as a good friend of mine put it, “you love your baby, but you also love you too”.

Maybe next month I’ll finally get to those toenails and solo jogs, but for now, I’m re-learning what it means to take time for me, starting with Netflix, books and a face mask.

So if you can new mamas, carve out just a little bit of time for you – even if there are a million things to do around the house.
