I’m a week out of my first triathlon and I’m still thinking about it. There’s something that I really liked about the training (but of course still on the fence about racing as I work through some mental blocks that I seem to have).
Today, I woke up and went out for an hour bike ride. It was the same distance (a smidge longer) than the race, and I had a blast. I saw 2 wild turkeys, 1 racoon and a duck. Riding along the Ottawa River felt peaceful and healing. “Ahhh” I thought ” this is what it’s like to just ride your bike with no goal”. I felt like a kid again. I enjoyed it. I came back home and had a great morning bringing my kids to a charity event at the local fire station.
I am temped to join my new friends who have decided to train for an Olympic distance triathlon. I so want to do this one day. But I decided after much thought, that I’m going to spend my summer doing some light training, and have a goal that is very attainable and fits into a busy summer taking care of 2 kids being off school and a career. The goal is to complete one swim, one run, and one bike per week. The distance is up to me. Of course if there are weeks where I do more, that’s great – but this will act as my baseline to stay active, and keep my fitness level where it is while I work on some other stuff.
In the fall, I’ll look to join a swimming program near me so I can get better at the swimming portion (and perhaps meet even more new people!)
I think I’ll see triathlon racing again – but for now, I’m going to enjoy my one swim, one bike and one run per week.
